Summary of Request

The IMLS Cares Act Grants Program is provides funds to libraries to assist in the response to COVID-19. COVID-19 has created an increased need to provide digital resources and the grant provides an option for internet access to people who do not have their own WiFi service. Since the Libraries will be accommodating fewer people in the branches due to physical distancing requirements, by checking out a mobile hotspot patrons will be able to access the internet from their home or other place at which the hotspot can receive cell service.

The grant application is for 100 mobile hotspots and would cover monthly unlimited data for two years and also provide for monitoring software to be able to disable the hotspots if not returned to the Library after the end of the checkout period. Moving forward, libraries will be accommodating fewer people in the branches due to physical distancing requirements; by checking out mobile hotspots patrons will be able to access the internet and free digital library resources from home or any other place at which the hotspot can receive cell service.

First year expenses covered by the grant total $77,593, and second year expenses amount to $63,549. The subsequent continuation of the mobile hotspot program including the number of hotspots, and subscriptions to data and monitoring will be determined by the availability of future funding.
