Recommended Action/Motion:
recommendation
Direct the Chief Executive Officer to extend an Invitation to CALFIRE to provide a presentation to the Board of Supervisors, tentatively scheduled November 17, 2020 on CALFIRE’s fire fuel reduction plans and projects in Mendocino County, to take place prior to the 2021 wildfire season.

Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
None directly related to this item. CALFIRE completed strategic, landscape level fire fuel reduction projects in the Ukiah and Willits areas prior to the current wildfire season and the Board issued a proclamation in appreciation of that critical effort.
Summary of Request:
Wildfires in the State of California have become a regular occurrence, burning homes, towns, and even cities with alarming frequency over the last decade. In response to an Executive Order by Governor Newsom that resulted in the Ukiah and Willits areas being identified as priority communities for fuel reduction work last year, CALFIRE’s Mendocino Unit was responsible for the implementation of strategic, landscape-level fuel reduction projects, including areas of prescribed burning, which reduced fuel loads and serve to better protect these communities. As can be seen with the devastating fires burning even now, the need for this type of work remains greater than ever around communities throughout Mendocino County and the state. In addition to the good work of CALFIRE, Mendocino County is fortunate to have active and engaged partners that are willing to seek grant funds and implement fuel reduction projects to complement the priorities identified by CALFIRE’s Mendocino Unit staff. For the benefit of the Board, our community partners, and the public, it is requested that CEO Angelo extend an invitation on behalf of the Board of Supervisors to CALFIRE’s Mendocino Unit for a presentation in November on the fire fuel reduction plans and projects they will be undertaking in Mendocino County prior to the 2021 wildfire season.
