Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) and U.S. Forest Service-collectively referred to as “the parties”-recognize that the public use of NFS lands is usually located in areas that are remote or sparsely populated. The parties also recognize that the enforcement of State and local law is related to the administration and regulation of NFS lands and MCSO has a limited amount of financing to meet its responsibility of enforcing these laws. The purpose of the Cooperative Law Enforcement Agreement is to document a cooperative effort between the parties to enhance State and local law enforcement in connection with activities on NFS lands. The U.S. Forest Service provides reimbursement to MCSO for law enforcement services it provides on NFS lands. The U.S. Forest Service allocates an annual amount of $13,000 to MCSO for patrol and controlled substance services.

The Cooperative Law Enforcement Agreement is being submitted for retroactive consideration because MCSO did not receive the Agreement for processing until October 23, 2020.
