Recommended Action/Motion:

recommendation

Receive presentation from CalFire Mendocino Unit Chief George Gonzalez on CalFire's Fire fuel reduction plans and projects intended for completion in Mendocino County prior to the 2021 wildfire season and beyond.

End

Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

On November 17, 2021 the Board of Supervisors received a presentation from Chief Gonzalez regarding fuel reduction plans and projects. On February 23, 2021, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to invite Chief Gonzalez to return with an update on CalFire fire mitigation projects throughout the County.

Summary of Request

In November, 2020, CalFire Chief Gonzalez presented to the BOS the Mendocino Unit's plans for fuel reduction projects. Chief Gonzalez also expressed the need for help in acquiring archeological reviews of projects and provide a list of CalFire's priority projects. Supervisor Haschak has been working with Chief Gonzalez in providing a list of qualified and available archeologists. With a drought and another fire season quickly approaching, public awareness of CalFire's priority projects and plans are important in keeping the public informed and improve the collaboration between CalFire and the County so that projects can be expedited. A list of the priority projects to be completed this spring as well as projects planned for next year will help to keep all of us united in our goals for safer communities.
