Recommended Action/Motion:

recommendation

Accept presentation on code enforcement in Mendocino County and provide direction to staff.

Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

Mendocino County enforces its codes through staff working in a variety of County departments, including Planning and Building, County Counsel and the Sheriff’s departments. County Supervisors adopt a list of highest priority code violations, and then County staff adjust staffing and strategies to effectively address code violations, prioritizing the board’s highest priority items.

In 2014 the Board of Supervisors adopted a list of its highest priority code enforcement items. With four supervisors joining the board since 2014, it is timely for County supervisors to reaffirm the 2014 list or adopt a modified list. Further, Supervisors McGourty and Gjerde believe now is also a timely moment for the board to affirm its intentions for code enforcement, because at this time the board is considering a regulatory ordinance and program for enforcement of new cannabis cultivation sites.

Supervisors McGourty and Gjerde ask the board to hear from staff at County Code Enforcement, County Counsel and County Sheriff’s Office, as well as staff from Humboldt County. After hearing their presentations, and comments from the public, supervisors should provide direction, as appropriate. Staff is prepared to revise staffing levels and strategies to achieve goals adopted by the board.

Summary of Request

Hear presentation by County staff from Code Enforcement, County Counsel and the Sheriff’s Office and the public, and provide direction, as appropriate.
