Summary of Request

Crisis Intervention Training provides specialized and comprehensive training to law enforcement personnel who respond to incidents involving a person with a mental illness. Law Enforcement personnel learn to identify signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to utilize a range of stabilization and de-escalation techniques. Crisis Intervention Trainings are often paid for and provided by the law enforcement agency or health care agency with personnel being trained. Often CIT is embedded into the agency as a routine training for personnel. Agencies embedding CIT as part of their routine training program would be one of the next steps in expanding CIT in Mendocino County.

From 2019 - 2020, Mendocino County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services sponsored three Crisis Intervention Trainings (CIT) in an effort to bring CIT to Mendocino County. One hundred forty-nine total law enforcement, first responders, and community members attended these trainings.  The total cost for the three trainings total $38,317.07. In 2020, Mendocino County Sheriff Office provided (Measure B funds reimbursing cost) a three-day Crisis Intervention Training providing 26 patrol and corrections deputies only (due to COVID-19 restrictions) a basic understanding of the symptoms and behaviors associated with mental illness and offering strategies for managing mental health related concerns in the course of community police work.

CIT International, Inc. is a nonprofit membership organization whose primary purpose is to facilitate understanding, development, and implementation of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) programs throughout the U.S. and worldwide in order to promote and support collaborative efforts to create and sustain more effective interactions among law enforcement, mental health care providers, individuals with mental illnesses, their families, and communities and to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
