Summary of Request:
Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week, the nation has celebrated its police officers.
This group of dedicated men, women and K9’s provide public safety in every locale of the nation and U.S. territories, upholding the law of the land, helping communities in times of disaster and unfathomable tragedies, serving all who reside in and visit their districts.
In 2019, 128 police officers lost their lives, this is a decrease of 18% from 2018 statistics, but any life lost is too much. The deaths were almost evenly split between firearms and traffic accidents with the rest from health or other circumstances. Sadly, this reminds each of us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price. As of December 2019, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington is inscribed with more than 22,000 names of officers killed in the line of duty dating to the first known death in 1786.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office alone has experienced eight losses since 1863. Sheriff William H. Tainter in 1863, Sheriff John H. Smith in 1905, Constable Thomas Sharp Lynch in 1909, Pt. Arena Marshal John F. Dixon in 1915, Deputy William A. White in 1950, Deputy George R. (Bob) Davis in 1995, K9 Morgan in 2012, Deputy Ricky Paul Del Fiorentino in 2014.
The National Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week is a time for each of us to consider and appreciate the contributions to our public safety that all officers everywhere dedicate themselves to providing.
