PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
On April 23, 2019 and May 5, 2020 the BOS approved Proclamations for National Correctional Officers Week.
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187 creating "National Correctional Officers Week" designating the first full week in May to recognize the work, dedication and service of correctional officers who work in jails, prisons and community corrections across the country.
Correctional officers face dangerous situations each day in their work life which creates a heightened state of vigilance to protect themselves and others in the facilities where they work. Correction officers adhere to strict security procedures and protocols while performing their duties. Those protocols and procedures often change or are updated or removed; training to keep up with the latest rules is an ongoing part of the job. Correctional Officers work in closed facilities, out of sight of the general public and therefore their service is often forgotten, however they are a critical force in the array of public safety services to the community.
Please join us in recognizing their contributions to the community and their service during the week of May 2-8, 2021 "National Correctional Officers Week".
