Summary of Request

The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is the State’s contracted Child Welfare Services training entity for the Northern California region, to which Mendocino County is assigned. The UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education program offers training programs specific to the field of human services and California child welfare services that cannot be obtained from another general training entity. Trainings are intended to build staff’s skills and promote professional development to enhance the quality of services provided to Mendocino County residents. These trainings are in addition to State mandated and funded training for social workers and social worker supervisors, and allow UC Davis to provide trainings specifically for Mendocino County Family & Children’s Services (FCS) to enhance state-mandated training and provide human services training to non-social work staff.

Mendocino County FCS previously contracted with UC Davis for human services and California child welfare training services, with the most recent agreement lasting for a two-year term. During the latest two-year training agreement, UC Davis provided 17.5 units of human services professional development trainings for FCS clerical staff and FCS program specialist/analyst staff. Trainings for FCS clerical staff was in four modules with a focus on communicating customer service excellence, motivations and handling difficult people, time management, work efficiency and task prioritization, and personal engagement in work. Trainings for FCS program specialist/analyst staff was in seven modules with a focus on critical thinking and decision-making skills, professionalism and communication skills in the workplace, turning state directives/policy documents into department procedures, data analysis and reporting, written communication skills and presentation skills. This new agreement with UC Davis enables FCS to continue work with UC Davis to offer these customized trainings to FCS staff across classifications over the next two fiscal years.
