Summary of Request

In April 2016, the Mendocino Coast Humane Society transmitted a solicited letter of interest regarding the County’s former Animal Shelter facility located in Fort Bragg, which is immediately adjacent to the Mendocino Coast Human Society.  The Executive Office has been in discussions with Mendocino Coast Humane Society regarding the potential use of the facility and the proposed benefits of such an arrangement, including:

                     Providing more sheltering for coastal canine strays, with the ability for County Animal Control to transport strays to the Fort Bragg facility rather than transport to Ukiah;

                     Animals would have the potential to be received and cared for by Mendocino Coast Humane Society until redeemed, adopted or transferred out;

                     The facility could be used for emergency animal housing and shelter (i.e. during the event of local emergency or evacuation, etc.);

                     Additional dog kennels could be used during “animal overflow” situations;

                     A “community room” could be used for community programs, volunteer orientation, trainings, and education.

The Executive Office is currently developing a draft Facility Use and Animal Care and Shelter Services Agreement, including details associated with the potential service model, hours of operation, aspects associated with daily care of animals, reporting requirements, adherence to mandates, and operational needs.  We anticipate an agreement going to the Board of Supervisors for review and approval in December of this year.
