SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Approximately 7,760 Mendocino County residents have a diagnosis of diabetes. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in California and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to significant health related issues. This year's theme is "Managing Diabetes - It's Not Easy but It's Worth It" emphasizing the importance of managing diabetes to prevent health-related issues and the knowledge that you are not alone.
Support groups and education are available through Ukiah Valley Medical Center at (707) 463-7527; Frank R. Howard Hospital, Willits at (707) 459-6801; and Mendocino Coast District Hospital at (707) 961-4744. Some programs require a medical recommendation/referral.
