Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board routinely adopts proclamations recognizing special events in Mendocino County. On December 8, 2015 the Board of Supervisors adopted a Proclamation recognizing Wreaths Across America Day.

Summary of Request

The National Wreaths Across America Day is on December 17, 2016. Wreaths Across America’s mission, “Remember, Honor, Teach” was first carried out by coordinating a wreath laying ceremony in December at Arlington National Cemetery twenty-five years ago.  Wreaths Across America Day has grown through the years to include other veterans’ cemeteries throughout the Nation, other locations in all 50 states and beyond to spread their message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. The event is made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local ceremonies, raise funds to sponsor wreaths, and participate in the occasion. The cost of the program is paid by individual wreaths sponsors, corporate donors and volunteer truckers.

This is the third year that a Wreaths Across America Day will be held in Mendocino County. An undertaking by the Ukiah Shamrock, Redwood Valley-Calpella,  Potter Valley and Fort Bragg 4-H Clubs that began earlier in the year with the Willits 4-H Club , the American Legion Post 529 in Hopland and the Round Valley 4-H Club with the Covelo American Legion Post 759 joining the local endeavor to honor our local veterans.

The local ceremonies will simultaneously be held at 9 a.m. on December 17, 2016 at Russian River Cemetery in Ukiah, the Rose Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Bragg, the Potter Valley Cemetery, Cemetery District of the Redwoods in Willits, American Legion Hall Post 759 in Covelo, and the Hopland Cemetery. The wreath-laying ceremonies are non-political and all County residents are invited to attend. The Board of Supervisors have been asked to declare by proclamation December 17, 2016 National Wreaths Across America Day in Mendocino County and to present the proclamation during the ceremony at each location.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Do not adopt proclamation.
