Summary of Request

The City of Willits offers many important services to travelers on Highway 101, including fuel, food, lodging, shops, as well as attractions like the County Museum, Skunk Train, Roots of Motive Power, parks and more.  Current signage regarding the existence of and services offered in Willits is inadequate and with the opening of the 101 Bypass, even with adequate signage, there will be adverse impacts on many businesses in Willits as well as a reduction in City revenues.  In September 2016, the Willits City Counsel requested that Caltrans immediately order and have installed at least one additional sign along northbound 101, approximately two miles south of the Willits exit, saying "Willits, two miles: gas, food, lodging, hospital, or similar wording.  The City of Willits indicates that Caltrans has installed some signage since the resolution was passed and Caltrans continues to work with staff to find additional opportunities to establish beneficial signage.  Willits City officials have indicated they would appreciate a letter to Caltrans from the County to assist the City in securing proper signage.
