Summary of Request:
The 9-1-1 world is advancing at a quick pace. Wireless calls to the 9-1-1 center now account for 80% of the call volume in Mendocino County’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). In the past, dispatchers were dependent on wall maps and map books for location information. That has evolved to geographic information system mapping,(GIS) an electronic mapping system (similar to google earth) that gives Public Safety Dispatchers the ability to visualize and interpret the location of callers.
The importance of GIS data dispatch- mapping in the PSAP cannot be overemphasized. Accurate data, combined with tactical mapping is critical for locating incidents and callers. Dispatchers must have up-to-date, reliable GIS data to ensure accurate location information. This is important and an absolute necessity, dispatchers need this information to help save lives.
The State 9-1-1 office has been working with our PSAP and will 100% fund and purchase the GIS-Based maps, workstation, and monitors. The County will issue a zero dollar purchase order and the State 9-1-1 Grant will pay the manufacturer (CDW) directly for the items on the County’s behalf and the County will receive the asset.
Mendocino County needs a well-defined GIS system to support our PSAP. GIS improves planning for future challenges facing the 9-1-1 system like maintenance and continued data development. Having a GIS workstation and monitors will help Mendocino County achieve this goal. The Sheriff’s Office Information Services Department has a trained GIS programmer who will be responsible for developing and maintaining the GIS data for our PSAP. The costs of the proposed GIS workstation and monitors for the (MCSO) 9-1-1 Dispatch Center will be fully offset by the State 9-1-1 grant.
