SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Public Health (PH) and the Mendocino County Breastfeeding Coalition request that the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors join the nation and adopt a proclamation to recognize the month of August 2017 as Breastfeeding Month in Mendocino County. This proclamation is to raise community awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding as a proven disease prevention strategy and also an important component of emotional health for both infant and mother, and to promote support for mothers who choose to breastfeed.

The Mendocino County Breastfeeding Coalition is a local collaborative which was formed in the late 1990's by local leaders of both the WIC Program and the Le Leche League to promote and support breastfeeding through education and outreach in our community. The coalition is composed of both a coastal and an inland group, each meeting monthly. Membership is composed of representatives from HHSA PH, FIRST 5 Mendocino, healthcare providers, health advocates, and breastfeeding mothers.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION/MOTION:
Return to staff for alternative handling.
