The County of Mendocino conducted initial analysis of a potential project for the alternate access route for Brooktrails. Funding needs of over $22 million were identified for the project, which exceed expectation of available funding in the foreseeable future. After completing the initial analysis, this project fell from a priority of #8 to #47 on MCDOT's Integrated Work Program Priorities Top 50 projects with no identified funding or program timeframe. No action has been taken since 2014. .

An improved second access would relieve traffic along Sherwood Road, currently the only practical access to the community, and provide an alternative during times of emergency. Recent fires in Mendocino County have again brought to light the dire need for this access route to be addressed.
