Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The Board of Supervisors has accepted the Mendocino County Superintendent of Schools’ status report annually since January 2007. The last report was accepted on November 14, 2016.

Summary of Request

Williams was a class-action lawsuit filed in May 2000 claiming the state’s poorest children are being denied equal educational opportunities. The suit alleged that public school students lacked equal access to instructional materials, safe and decent school facilities and qualified teachers.

Settlement of the lawsuit in August 2004 has resulted in a package of laws known as the “Williams Legislation” aimed at identifying and correcting impediments to student academic success spelled out in the lawsuit.

The law requires that the County Superintendent present an annual report to the governing board of each school district, the County Board of Education and the County Board of Supervisors on the state of these schools. The report provides a summary of the 17/18 findings from the Mendocino County Office of Education site review teams.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Do not accept the status report and provide direction to staff.
