Summary of Request:
Supervisor Croskey is requesting adoption of the Proclamation recognizing May 13-19, 2018, as Police Week in Mendocino County. In 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police week, the annual tribute to law enforcement service and sacrifice.
There are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments. A total of 360 new names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring, including 129 officers killed in 2017 and 231 officers killed in previous years.
The service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored during the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil, on the evening of May 13, 2018. Whereas, May 15th is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. Flags should be flown at half staff.
