Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

In 2011 the Board approved the USDA and Air Quality Board grants for the new Bookmobile.

Summary of Request

The Grant for the amount of $100,000 for a new "Library with No Walls" vehicle is for a standard size van or truck which will be taken into communities which are not visited by the current Bookmobile. Library staff with an approved Class C driver’s license will drive the vehicle to underserved populations such as rural schools, preschools, tribal areas, senior trailer parks, homeless encampments, nursing homes and migrant neighborhoods.  “The Library with No Walls” will be at the location for 3-4 hours allowing time for people to visit and connect with staff members.

Along with a small selection of materials, the goal will be to provide reference assistance, survey the needs of the area, connect people with appropriate resources, provide literacy tools, conduct storytimes, provide access to our county seed libraries, have small scale library programs and have other organizations present to interact and provide resources.

This grant calls for matching library funds of $40,000 for which the library would provide about half through the normal fiscal year 18/19 operating costs of the library as well as half from library reserves.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Not approve the grant submission and provide further instruction to staff
