End
Recommended Action/Motion:
recommendation
Authorize the Mendocino County Library to accept grant award of $10,000 from NEA to fund the NEA Big Read Program.
End
Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
There are multiple instances of the Board approving similar grants such as the California Reads Grants.
Summary of Request:
The NEA Big Read is a prestigious program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The National Endowment for the Arts will partner with Mendocino County Library and with organizations such as the Arts Council of Mendocino County, the National Parks Service, Radio Station KNYO’s Library Hour, and the County Museum to present county-wide book discussions, art workshops, and much more. The book of short stories, Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link, was chosen through a patron survey. Most of the funds from the grant will go toward book purchases, speaker fees, library programming, and advertising. The Library portion of programming funds will come out of the usual budgeted program and salary expenses.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Do not approve grant and provide staff with guidance.
