Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

July 12, 2016 approval to accept award of the 2016 U.S. DOJ Grant.  September 12, 2017 ratification of submission of 2017-18 U.S. DOJ Grant Application.

Summary of Request

The U.S. DOJ Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program issues an opportunity to apply for funds each year.  The turn-around time between receiving the opportunity to apply and the submission deadline is short and does not give enough time to come before the Board of Supervisors for approval of funding. On August 16, 2018, a letter requesting approval to submit the application was sent to the CEO as per County Policy 25, Section One, Number 4 to seek approval with follow up to the Board of Supervisors at their next available meeting.  The proposed award for Mendocino County is $24,422.  For the past several years, the Sheriff Office as applied for and received annual DOJ JAG awards. The grant funds will be used to replace aged computer equipment that is essential to front line law enforcement and support staff and will allow the Sheriff’s Office to avoid degradation of public safety due to inadequate equipment.  Approval of this item will commence the 30-day period during which citizens and neighborhood or community organizations will have the opportunity to comment on the award application.  Award notification and request to accept funding will be brought to the Board of Supervisors at a future meeting date as per County Policy 25.
