Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
BOS Agreement No. 18-021 was approved on May 13, 2018, Item 4(g).
Summary of Request:
As per California Health and Safety Code, Section 101025-101070, California Government Code, Mendocino County Code and Mendocino County Resolution #10-006, the County of Mendocino is mandated to have an appointed medical doctor serve as the County Health Officer.
Upon the retirement of the County’s previous Health Officer, the Board of Supervisors contracted with Dr. Gary Pace to fulfill those duties. While providing services as County Health Officer, Dr. Pace proposed the idea to change the County Health Officer role from contracted services to a full-time employee position. The department is now researching the feasibility of changing the County Health Officer employment status, and the RFQ is on hold.
The first amendment to BOS Agreement No. 18-021 was executed in order to extend the term of the original contract, allowing the use of unspent funds. This second Amendment in the amount of $90,830 will further extend Dr. Pace’s services as County Health Officer through June 30, 2019, while the department and Human Resources researches the possibility of a County Health Officer employee position.
Dr. Gary Pace was the Interim Health Official for Lake County, has been providing County Health Officer services to Mendocino County since March 14, 2018, and is experienced performing the duties of a county health officer. He has lived and worked in Mendocino County, in both Fort Bragg and Boonville, and is familiar with the community. Dr. Pace is a practicing clinician who has vast experience working with tribes as well as substance abuse treatment. Additionally, Dr. Pace speaks Spanish, which is beneficial in reaching the Latino population in Mendocino County.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Return to staff for alternative handling.
