Summary of Request

Unexpected cardiac arrest is a major cause of premature death. Effective bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can help reduce mortality. Studies have shown that early awareness and education focused on our youth will help make CPR a universal skill for future generations.

In 2014, Mendocino County founded Save Lives Mendocino, a program to support local teachers as they train students on the use of CPR. The Public Health Branch of the Health and Human Services Agency purchased Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) using Maddy funds (Emergency Medical Services funds) in support of Save Lives Mendocino. Save Lives Mendocino held the first public CPR training at the Mendocino County Apple Fair the same year. Since that time, one hundred AEDs have been placed in schools, camps, children’s sports venues, and law enforcement agencies throughout the county. Save Lives Mendocino’s ultimate goal is to raise awareness of the importance of bystander CPR and have one hundred percent of Mendocino County residents trained in hands-only CPR.

As illustration of Save Lives Mendocino’s effectiveness, two students of the Accelerated Achievement Academy, in recent life-saving efforts, successfully intervened and helped save the life of a classmate through the use of CPR. This item requests Board recognition of those two students, Eloy Lopez, and Alyssa Quail, along with the Academy and instructor Pat Garrett.
