Summary of Request

Each year, CSAC honors the most innovative programs developed and implemented by California Counties through their Challenge Awards.  These unique awards recognize the innovative and creative spirit of California county governments as they find innovative, effective and cost-saving ways to provide programs and services to their citizens.

This year CSAC selected Mendocino County for the Rural Challenge award in the Health and Human Services Category for Mendocino County Working on Wellness Program.  “MCWOW” is an innovative program designed to decrease medical claims costs by engaging employees in healthy behaviors through a wellness incentive program tied to health plan premium reductions.  Through the program, MCWOW was able to identify areas of high risk, and create a culture of health in the County workplace through engagement resulting in decreased county costs.  Mendocino County’s Health Plan consultant identified that the stability of the County’s health plan rates were directly attributed to the increased participation in the Wellness program.

Alternative Action/Motion:

Do not accept award; return to staff for direction.
