SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
There are more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States. Mendocino County Sheriff's Office has approximately 119 deputies. Other law enforcement agencies in the County include local Police Departments, California Highway Patrol, State Parks Officers, Cal Fire Officers, Bureau of Land Management Officers, Department of Fish and Wildlife Officers, United States Forest Service Officers and Drug Enforcement Officers. Since January 1, 2018, there have been 129 officers killed in the line of duty. Violent assaults against law enforcement officers has increased drastically since record keeping began in 1791. The profession is dangerous and requires many sacrifices for the officers as well as their families because they serve long hours, they work overtime and holidays and miss many special occasions. It is often a thankless job and yet many answer the call to duty to keep our communities safe so that the citizens can enjoy life relatively free of fear of lawless individuals. For this reason we thank each and every law enforcement officer, present, past and future for their service and dedication; and we celebrate them, their families and the profession with a special day "National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day", January 9, 2019.
