Summary of Request

Public Health Accreditation, which is currently overseen nationally by the Public Health Accreditation Board, is a voluntary process meant to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of local, tribal, and state public health departments. Goals of accreditation include: promoting high performance and continuous quality improvement; recognizing high performers that meet nationally accepted standards of quality and improvement; illustrating health department accountability; increasing the visibility and public awareness of governmental public health; and clarifying the public’s expectations of health departments.

Mendocino County’s Public Health Branch of the Health and Human Services Agency began the accreditation process in the fall of 2015 and has completed prerequisite steps, including completion of the Local Public Health System Assessment, the Community Health Needs Assessment, and a Community Health Improvement Plan. Although accreditation is currently elective, states have started to make this mandatory for local health departments. Presently 28 California counties are seeking accreditation, and 13 have been accredited.

Today’s item requests that the Board of Supervisors approve and sign the attached letter supporting Public Health Accreditation in Mendocino County. The letter of support is required as part of applying for national accreditation.
