Summary of Request

Fire cameras are effective in providing situational awareness to assist first responders and government leaders with decision-making during a disaster.  In collaboration with corporate entities and public agencies, The Regents of the University of California, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego (Scripps) has established fire camera networks in the Lake Tahoe region, the State of Nevada, and San Diego and Orange Counties.  Currently, Scripps has agreements with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and other corporate sponsors to establish a similar network in North Bay Counties.  Through its agreement with PG&E, Scripps would facilitate the provision of fire cameras and related installation of equipment to each of the North Bay Counties.  Each of the North Bay Counties first responders would have priority in the use and manipulation of the cameras within their respective jurisdictions.

Approval of this Memorandum of Understanding allows the County of Mendocino to receive five fire cameras from Scripps.  The Mendocino County’s Information Services Division has identified five primarily county-owned sites with existing communication towers to install the fire cameras.  The public will have the ability to observe images from the cameras at www.alertwildfire.org.  Scripps will cover the cost of the cameras, initial installation, ongoing maintenance, and repairs.
