Summary of Request:
On November 6, 2018 the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved a grant Agreement with the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The Office of Traffic Safety’s mission is to effectively and efficiently administer traffic safety grants while fostering partnerships to deliver innovative programs that reduce traffic deaths, injuries and economic losses. Using grant funds, Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Public Health (PH) Branch will collaborate with North Coast Opportunities Inc. to provide services increasing engagement and awareness through safe transportation practices.
North Coast Opportunities Inc. will work with school age children, their parents, and seniors throughout Mendocino County to provide services that improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. Traffic safety data suggests that adults and senior pedestrians in Mendocino County are at a high risk for accidents. Additionally, it has been identified through work performed by Safe Routes to School, that parent and senior fear of accident is a major barrier to increasing Active Transportation such as walking and bicycling. North Coast Opportunities Inc. will decrease fear as a barrier by providing empowerment through education regarding the positive benefit to risk ratio in opting for Active Transportation. Education will focus on the health benefits of walking and biking, and show that those benefits far exceed the risks when pedestrians and bicyclists employ safe traffic engagement strategies. The project goal is to decrease pedestrian and bicyclist collisions with an emphasis on school age children, their parents, and senior safety and mobility. HHSA Community Health Education and Engagement (CHEE) will provide programmatic and fiscal oversight for this program.
HHSA received the grant award from OTS on September 29, 2018 with a grant start date identified as October 1, 2018. The agreement between Mendocino County HHSA and North Coast Opportunities Inc. was drafted shortly after receipt of grant award, and immediately routed through the County approval process.
