PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
On May 8, 2018 the Board of Supervisors approved a Proclamation for National Peace Officer's Memorial Day and National Police Week in Mendocino County.
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week which May 15 falls as National Police Week, the nation has celebrated its police officers. This group of dedicated men, women and K9's provide public safety in every locale of the nation and U.S. territories, upholding the law of the land, helping communities in times of disaster and unfathomable tragedies, serving all who reside in and visit their districts. In 2018, 144 police officers lost their lives, reversing a one year decline in 2017, which saw 129 police officers lost. The deaths were almost evenly split between firearms and traffic accidents with the rest from health or other circumstances. Sadly, this reminds each of us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price. As of December 2018, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington is inscribed with 21,541 names of officers killed in the line of duty dating to the first known death in 1791.
