RECOMMENDED ACTION/MOTION:
recommendation
Approve closure of certain County departments for summer recess on July 5, 2019.

PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
County Offices close annually for winter recess on select dates in November and December. Additionally, as part of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Report on June 4, 2019, the CEO requested direction from the Board of Supervisors regarding the possibility of offering staff an extended weekend, following the Thursday, July 4th County Holiday. The Board of Supervisors endorsed closing non-vital offices, and directed the Chief Executive Officer to present an item for approval on June 18, 2019.

SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
In previous years, the County has offered an opportunity for departments to consider office closures, depending on the day of the week that 4th of July falls. This year, 4th of July is on a Thursday and the County would like to offer staff an extended weekend. This would be done under the same terms that are offered during winter holiday closures. Certain County offices would be closed on July 5, 2019, and employees would be given the option of working behind the scenes, if interested. In no case would employees be forced to take paid or unpaid time off to accommodate the extended weekend. It would be at the discretion of individual department heads to determine the needs of their respective departments and whether their operations can be closed to the public on that date. As in the past, the County will issue a press release with details on the hours of operation for each County department for that week.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION/MOTION:
Do not approve closure.
