Summary of Request:
Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), is seeking ratification of its application for grant funds from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Justice and Mental Health Collaboration program. The grant provides support with collaborative planning and implementation to improve comprehensive response to individuals with mental illness who come in contact with the justice system. The original deadline to apply for the grant was June 25, 2019, but the Bureau of Justice Assistance extended the deadline to July 15, 2019, to allow applicants more time to complete necessary documents.
BHRS submitted an application to the Bureau of Justice Assistance on July 15, 2019, was awarded funding on September 24, 2019, and will enter into the resulting Grant Agreement, should the Board approve. BHRS will use grant funds to supplement efforts made by the Mendocino County Stepping Up Initiative to reduce prevalence of individuals with serious mental illness in jails. Through these efforts, Mendocino County should experience improved responses and outcomes for individuals with mental illnesses, or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
As part of receiving grant funds, Mendocino County must provide a local match of $75,000. HHSA will leverage existing funds to meet this requirement.
