January 8, 2018 the BOS approved a Proclamation for the January 9, 2019 National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
There are over 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States. Mendocino County Sheriff's Office has approximately 119 deputies. Other law enforcement agencies in the County include local Police Departments, California Highway Patrol, State Parks Officers, Cal Fire Officers, Bureau of Land Management Officers, Department of Fish and Wildlife Officers, United States Forest Service Officers and Federal Drug Enforcement Officers. Since January 1, 2019, there have been 111 officers killed in the line of duty nationwide, 10 of those occurred in California. This number is likely to be higher between the writing of this item in December 2019 and the meeting date of January 7, 2020. The job is dangerous on many levels. The daily danger of patrol is high, the political climate increases the danger, the drug crisis increases the danger, gangs, domestic violence, there are many factors that play into the constant danger that officers face every day of their service and sadly they do not often receive recognition for their service.
