Summary of Request

Consistent with the Board’s legislative platform, approve a letter signed by Board Chair John Haschak and Vice Chair Gjerde to support a grant application to provide essential medical, law enforcement, health and human services, plus city water and wastewater service in Fort Bragg City limits during future interruptions in electrical service through the installation of an array of solar photovoltaic and batteries in Fort Bragg. Buildings to be served by the project include the County of Mendocino’s sheriff substation and health and human services buildings on South Franklin Street in Fort Bragg city limits. If awarded, the grant would pay for the installation. No funding is requested from the County of Mendocino. If awarded, solar PVs would be installed on multiple properties, including the County’s properties, most likely above vehicles in the parking lots. Notice of the grant application was only released in mid-December. Fully completed grant applications were due on Friday January 19. The County, through Supervisor Gjerde, was invited into the Fort Bragg Critical Loads Microgrid Project team after the board’s January 4 meeting. As a letter of support for the project was deemed consistent with the board’s legislative agenda, a letter was signed by the Chair and Vice Chair, with placement on the consent calendar after-the-fact. The City of Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast District Hospital have already provided letters of support for the grant application.
