Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:
Supervisor Carre Brown represents the County on the Board of Directors for the Rural Counties Representatives of California (RCRC). As the Mendocino County representative many issues and topics have been brought forward for Board consideration and possible action.
Summary of Request:
RCRC transmitted a letter (attachment A) to its member Counties from the Governor’s recently appointed Director of the Forest Management Task Force (FMTF), Jennifer Montgomery, requesting a point of contact to provide local knowledge for wildfire management of the landscape and to closely participate with the FMTF in their decision making process.
Mendocino County has acres of State and Federal lands within its political boundary and is home to Jackson Demonstration State Forest, the largest demonstration forest operated by the State of California, as well as privately owned forest lands. The Board should consider an appointment to the working group to benefit on-going projects and/or needed projects for Wildfire resiliency in Mendocino County.
Background
The Governor’s Forest Management Task Force (FMTF) is seeking a greater level of input and involvement from local governments, including counties, to advise and inform the efforts of the FMTF on natural and working landscape management for forest resilience and wildfire prevention. The FMTF is beginning a bi-monthly working group dedicated to local governments which will be held both in Sacramento and potentially throughout California’s rural counties to help foster a more collaborative effort between the state, federal, and local governments.
The FMTF has strategic input on all levels of forest management in California, from budget allocations to state agency plans and procedures to federal collaboration and everything in between. This is a key opportunity for the County to help guide this new local government process from the beginning and RCRC encourages Counties to be involved by appointing a representative.
Alternative Action/Motion:
Do not appoint a representative.
