Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

Each year the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors proclaims March as “Women’s History Month” in recognition of the achievements of all women in Mendocino County. On February 25, 2020, a Proclamation was adopted and several honorees were listed.

Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors proclaims March as “Women’s History Month” in recognition of the achievements of all women in Mendocino County. The annual celebration was held on Sunday, March 1, at the Saturday Afternoon Clubhouse, 107 South Oak Street, in Ukiah.

“Valiant Women of the Vote” was the theme for this year's event. The 2020 theme celebrated the women who have fought for a woman’s right to vote in the United States and the passage of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution officially giving women that right. The 2020 theme also recognized the intersecting forms of discrimination women have faced, and continue to face, throughout American history and celebrates the diverse women who have fought, and continue to fight, discrimination at all levels and in all forms.

The tradition of the annual Women's History Celebration is to recognize and honor particular women who exemplify each year's designated theme for contributions to their communities through their fields of work.  Several Mendocino County women were recognized for their work strengthening the vote. One honoree was unknown at the time of the publication of the agenda.

A new award this year was created. Val Muchowski received the Bella Azbug: Passion in Politics Award and is the first recipient. Ms. Muchowski deserves recognition for her years of commitment of gaining women involvement in the political process from the Board of Supervisors.
