Previous Board/Board Committee Actions:

The 2022 proclamation for National Correctional Officers Week was adopted by the Board on May 3, 2022.

Summary of Request

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187 declaring the first full week in May of each year as “National Correctional Officers Week” to recognize the work, dedication, and service of correctional officers who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country.

Correctional officers face dangerous situations every day in their work life which creates a heightened state of vigilance to protect themselves and others in facilities where they work. Correctional officers adhere to strict security procedures and protocols while performing their duties. Those protocols and procedures often change or are updated. Training to keep up with the latest rules is an ongoing part of the job. Correctional officers work in closed facilities, out of sight of the general public and therefore their service is often forgotten, however, they are a critical force in the array of public safety services to the community.

Please join us in recognizing correctional officers’ contributions to the community and their service during the week of May 7-13, 2023 as “National Correctional Officers Week”.
