PREVIOUS BOARD/BOARD COMMITTEE ACTIONS:
The 2022 proclamation for National Peace Officer Memorial Day and National Police Week was adopted by the Board on May 3, 2022.

SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week, the nation has celebrated its police officers.

This group of dedicated men, women, and K9's provide public safety in every locale of the nation and U.S. territories, upholding the law of the land, helping communities in times of disaster and unfathomable tragedies, serving all who reside in and visit their districts.

In 2022, 245 police officers lost their lives. This is a decrease of 65% from the 2021 statistics, but any life lost is too much. The deaths were almost evenly split between gunfire and automobile accidents with the rest from medical or other circumstances. Sadly, this reminds all of us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price. As of December 2022, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington is inscribed with more than 23,000 names of officers killed in the line of duty dating to the first known death in 1786.
