Summary of Request

The Mendocino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office responds to investigations involving deaths which are reportable per State Statute through the Coroner’s Division. Duties of the Coroner include the removal of decedents and transportation to the appropriate facilities for pathology to be performed in order to determine a cause and manner of death.

Many times deaths of individuals occur in locations that include cramped spaces, rural areas and locations which are not conducive to allowing several responders to assist with lifting and removing the decedent. The reduction of personnel numbers, including first responders such as Fire and EMS providers, are also causing fewer numbers of personnel to assist with the removal of a decedent.

For the aforementioned reasons, injuries to Sheriff’s Deputy-Coroners and first responders directly related to lifting, moving and manipulation of decedents are becoming more frequent. The hydraulic lift power gurneys will alleviate many of the injuries previously suffered therefore reducing injury to personnel. Funds for this purchase are available directly through Risk Management’s insurance reimbursable safety/worker’s compensation prevention program. This will not impact the County’s insurance premiums in any way and is designed as a loss prevention benefit. The Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is requesting approval to purchase the hydraulic lift power gurneys from Ferno and add the equipment to the County’s list of fixed assets.
